How to Play Twenty-Nine

Partners bid for points, the trump stays hidden until someone asks.

Start playing

Teams and Cards

4 players, partners across the table. 32 cards: 7 to ace. In each suit the jack is highest, then 9, ace, 10, king, queen, 8, 7.

Points

Jacks are worth 3, nines 2, aces and tens 1: 28 points in the deck.

Bidding

After 4 cards each, players bid how many points their team will win (16 to 28) or pass. The highest bidder secretly chooses trump, and 4 more cards are dealt.

Play

Follow the suit led if you can. If you can't, you may ask to see trump: it is shown to everyone and you must play a trump if you have one. Until trump is shown, it doesn't win tricks.

Scoring

If the bidding team takes at least its bid, it gains a game point; otherwise it loses one. Reach the target to win; fall to minus the target and you lose.
